Lesson Three - "ed" ending

The letters ed are added to verbs to change the tense (from present to past). Below are three basic rules that demonstrate how to add the ed ending to verbs. Study each rule and then complete the practice exercise.

Rule 1: add ed to most words. If the word already ends in e, just add d
rate + ed = rated     spank + ed = spanked

Rule 2: if words end in y after a consonant, change y to i and add ed
Study + ed = studied     carry + ed = carried

Rule 3: if the word is short and has a short vowel sound, double the final consonant and add ed
Cap + ed = capped     wrap + ed = wrapped

Special: never double w,x,y, or z
Fix + ed = fixed     stay + ed = stayed
